MC 900 Ft. Jesus

[it is probably NOT adviseable
to refer to this artist as MC 274.32 Meter Jesus]

is the stage name of Mark Griffin, a classically-trained musician turned rapper and experimenter born in Dallas, Texas. Griffin's work was often considered well ahead of its time, and much of his sound and experimentation predates artists like Beck and Orbital.

Griffin's wit and formal education help him to inject complexity and humor into his work as MC 900 Ft. Jesus. Deriving his MC name from a sermon by Oral Roberts, Griffin's first album, Hell With The Lid Off (1990) was released under the name "MC 900 Ft. Jesus With DJ Zero", but the MC has sole billing on Welcome To My Dream (1991) and One Step Ahead of The Spider (1994).

According to a Chicago Tribune article dated November 8, 1991, DJ Zero appears on Dream under his real name, Patrick Rollins, because of uncertainty about whether he would have been able to tour in support of the album. Rollins/Zero is not listed in the credits for Spider.

MC 900 Ft. Jesus' music is influenced by hip-hop, incorporating many samples, but the lyrics are often quite off-kilter and mordant. "Hell With the Lid Off" included the cult single "Truth is Out of Style," a satire of postmodern man's self indulgence. His next hit was "The City Sleeps," which explores the mind of a serial arsonist. His last cult hit, "If I Only Had a Brain," [lyrics at bottom] created a splash thanks to a video directed by a young Spike Jonze as well as exposure on MTV's Beavis and Butt-Head and heavy national tour support.

Griffin's use of rap, electronica, and cool jazz (Griffin is a trumpeter, and between lyrics and beats he often plays like Miles Davis) is perhaps the reason he never achieved wide success. MC 900 Ft. Jesus is difficult to define, being utterly "danceable," thought provoking, humorous, disturbing, and genuinely musical all at the same time. Each one of his albums is unique and differ[s] from one another, and as a result, the hodge-podge of styles can be off-putting to a casual listener.

On September 18, 2003 someone claiming to be Griffin posted on a message board the following message [1]:

Glad someone remembers me. Still living in Dallas. Not doing any music at the moment. Actually I've been working on getting my flight instructor certificate. Aviation is a very cool antidote to the frustrations of the music biz. I guess one of these days I'll get some more music together, just can't say when yet. Take care, -Mark G. a/k/a mc 900 ft jesus

There is a Mark Griffin listed as Chief Pilot on a web site [2] for Soar Hawaii, but it is not clear if that is the same Griffin.

"If I Only Had a Brain"

by MC 900 Ft. Jesus

suppose i accidentally got my shit together
would i get a medal?
or a pat on the back and a little feather
i could stick in my cap or pin it to my shirt
go out in the yard and poke it in the dirt
or leave it in the woods where it couldnt be found
if it fell over, would it make a sound?
and if so, would it be the sound that you like?
or should I do it over, until I get it right?

You say everything i know is wrong
so do me a favor and play along
as the rusty gears turn
dont be alarmed if you smell something burning upstairs
its a BB rolling around in a box car
see us together

maybe it wouldnt be so hard to explain
if i only had a brain
somewhere on a higher mental plain
i might learn to come in from the rain
if i had a clue would i still be here with you?
gee whiz, if i only had a brain

who's that?
oh, its my little friend cupid
wearing a shirt that says im with stupid
always nearby whereever i go
he's looking out for me dont you know

mr excitement, never in a rut
johnny on the spot with an arrow in the butt
ouch i guess our love is true
now, if i could only get a clue
