Hand-tinted photograph of the Dutch exotic dancer Mata Hari, Fries (freeez) Museum, Leeuwarden, Netherlands. She was born Margaretha Geertruida Zelle in Leeuwarden in 1876, and was executed by a French firing squad for espionage in 1917. One account says her last words were "Merci, Monsieur," to her French lawyer.

Why aren't kids submitting their refrigerator art to Vleeptron? Don't kids make art anymore? Don't they have refrigerators? Are children no longer interested in huge scary monsters? Vleeptron recommends children crank out some art using the incredibly easy MS_Paint, which is tossed in for free with Windows. Vleeptron makes all its art with MS_Paint, but that's not MS_Paint's fault.

Oh, okay, as long as I'm back editing this post -- if you have Windows2000 or XP, check out a souped-up extra-snazzimafrastic version of MS_Paint which students at Washington State University created and are now giving away for freeeeeeeeeeeeee. They wrote it in a variant of C called C# (C Sharp).

"It supports layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools ..." and it's not anglocentric -- you can choose versions that talk you through it in Chinese (Simplified or Traditional), Czech, Dutch, Finnish, French, Frisian, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Russian or Spanish.

I just looked at some screenshots, and it seems that what these nice Paint.Net folks are offering is a freeeeeee equivalent of the Very Not Free Adobe Photo$hop. If you make computer images and mess around with photos, you either bought Photo$hop or Photo$hop Deluxe, or you've been robbing gas stations to be able to afford it. Download Paint.Net first -- bet it's just as good.
